As a member of a Learning Team, I am challenged with the task of documenting the new information we are collecting [much of it from the internet] and putting it into retreivable form. We are experimenting with outlining, hypertext, multiple views and key word or key phrase searching using a Lisp language. Is anyone else thinking about these things? We are still beginners.

This is my first exposure to Smilies. Are they as cool as they appear?

Dori,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, we wish to capture the learning. Also, we would like to structure the process somewhat so we don't end up with a stack of ideas.

We have studied the work at hf/caltech.edu and are impressed with it. What approach do you like? Bill

Bill, Dori,

I recently attended a lecture that covered a world class process for both capturing lessons learned, entering them in a huge database, and accessing them in real time. It is the Army's After Action Review process. The process is a blend of culture, process, and high technology. Quite interesting and effective.

There is a nice paper that has been produced on it titled: From Post-Mortem To Living Practice: An in-depth study of the evolution of the After Action Review. It was written by Marilyn J. Darling and Charles S. Parry. You can buy a copy of the paper by contacting Signet Consulting Group - (617) 242-7214 or via their website at www.signetconsulting.com.

Cheers!

PS - Dori, I hope you are doing well...

Hello Bill,

here is some experience from abroad. We could not solve that puzzle yoou are dealing with, until we redefined everything.
First, forget the technical aspect of methods or approaches.
Second, there is no information, there is only information for ...
If you can agree to that, then three steps may help.
1. Ask you group or try to find out what you are driving at (defining your goal)
2. Be aware that different aspects exist how people perceive a subject or topic, and try to define the aspect you want to tackle. There is no multiaspect approach. The language can help you with phrases like "belongs to", "is part of", "is reason for", "will lead to" etc. We developed a method that we call mindzapping. With that we can change the aspect of perceiving subjects deliberately. We have a list of important aspects, which I could send to you, but unfortunately you need some experience with that method.
3. Choose your tool or much better, develop your own. It does not need to be sophisticated in the beginning.

The basic idea of my remark is that the solution to your challenge is a conceptional one and not a technical one.
The main problem is that most people do not like this answer at all. "We bought all this expensive software and now someone comes and tells us to think before acting."
If there are any more questions or yoou run into specific problems just contact me. May be I have an idea..

Good luck
Wolfhard Symader

I must have pressed a wrong key. I had explained that we are investigating Service Learning or SL It requires teachers to modify practice so that some learning comes through community service projects. It works well when the community supplies volunteers to help plan and execute the projects.
We hope to gather info about successful projects and index it so it is useful to students, teachers, parents, volunteers and the recipients of the service. We want it presented as "just in time learning" rather than a pile of facts. A coach observes one in action and makes useful suggestions. This is what we wish to deliver. Bill

This is to thank digenti, Patrick and Dr. Symander for their thoughtful responses.
Patrick-Idid look at signet and read the Summary of the AAR paper. It does look valuable.
Dr. S-Your comments, repeated by digenti are very relevant. I visualize a common Knowledge Base from which the Educator view, the Student view and the Community views can be extracted.
digenti-you have me thinking about metaphors. Two come to mind. One is the research model. We start with a theory such as "teachers will accept help from adult volunteers from the community". Next we design an experiment to test the theory. After the experiment we do an AAR and decide if the experiment was valid. If so, we accept the result. If not, we redesign the experiment and try again.

Another metaphor might be a technical hand book. It contains a table of contents, text, footnotes, references, abstracts and a detailed index.

Hi Dori,

When I eliminated the final period (.) from the URL you posted, it seemed to work fine for me.

Thanks Rod for your correction. It does work better.
We have traveled away from ice and snow and not kept up our end of this dialogue.
Yesterday my colleague showed me how he copies and pastes letters, web info etc. into folders on his desktop. This may be common practice but I hadn't seen it before.
