Co-Evolving through Friendship
An open reception co-hosted by the World Café, Berkana Institute, Open Space, and the Art of Hosting

Monday, November 2, 2009—6:00 to 7:30 pm, Grand Crescent Room, Westin Seattle

Please join friends and colleagues of the World Café, Berkana Institute, Open Space, and the Art of Hosting to share stories, make new friends, and learn more about the principles, processes, and practices for hosting conversations about questions that matter. A cash bar and light snacks will help get the conversation started without spoiling your appetite for your own subsequent dining plans. Don’t be surprised if you meet others who will want to continue the conversation over the menu at a local restaurant.

The Artist as Catalyst: Reclaiming a Vital Source of Healing, Integration, and Presence
An evening program with Gary Malkin

Tuesday, November 3, 2009—7:30 to 9:00 pm, Westin Seattle

From time immemorial, the world’s peoples traversed life’s challenges in cohesive communities, with the vital support of chant, story, and drum. But somehow we’ve lost our connection to this essential source of meaning. Our ability to manage change and respond to opportunity expands when we use multi-sensory languages—such as music, poetry, and other art forms—to fully awaken us, bringing us back home to a remembrance of who we are and what matters most. Rather than simply a form of entertainment, the arts provide a portal to deepen our connection to meaning, strengthen our relationship to the present moment, and help us cultivate relationships that are healing, authentic, and resilient. What inevitably emerges within us is often referred to as “presence.” When we can cultivate this presence, we can be of better use to ourselves and others, finally understanding what it means to be alive, grateful for the preciousness of life. Join Emmy award-winning composer/ producer Gary Malkin in an experiential presentation/performance, exploring the generative impact music, spoken wisdom, and listening can have in our lives, especially during times of turbulent change.
