Applying Systems Thinking and

Module 1: Why the Systems View?

About This Module

Welcome to Module 1: Why the Systems View? In this module, we take a systems view of a specific situation to demonstrate Systems Thinking and its value.

In Module 2, you will be introduced to a conceptual framework to explain how Systems Thinking contributes to organizational learning, and the basic principles and process for thinking systemically about a situation. In Module 3, we will introduce a set of visual building blocks to describe important structures determining the behavior of systems of interest to us.

In Module 4, we will focus on planning effective interventions to improve systems performance. In Module 5, we will explore ways to identify the deeper structures affecting our behavior. We will look at practical ways to work with these mental models operating in our systems and in our conversations.

Module 6 will introduce templates you may find helpful in identifying more complex structures. Module 7 will pull this learning together in the "Steps in Systems Thinking." Module 8 includes a resource directory and guidelines for using Systems Thinking on the job.
